Earlier this month, Blue Dolphin Design and Engineering’s John Pocock (pictured center) assisted George Leone in the design; construction and speed run of Leone's Human Powered Vehicle (HPV).
Ron Layman piloted (and powered) the vehicle, comprised of a ChroMoly Steel frame and Carbon/Kevlar Composite Material fairing.
Pocock, Leone, Layman and crew were in pursuit of the World Record for a Human Powered Vehicle. Their HPV reached an amazing speed of 66.60 miles per hour (mph). While short of the current record time, it was still quite an accomplishment nonetheless and good enough for the 18th fastest time on record.
The speed run took place on a closed stretch of Highway 305 near Battle Mountain, Nevada. Leone has been involved with HPV's since the beginning of the competitions almost 30 years ago. In fact, Leone and Blue Dolphin Design and Engineering President Mark Jackson were on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's first HPV team.
Pocock is no stranger to human powered vehicles. He was involved with the Cal Poly HPV team (where Leone served as an advisor) from 1999 to 2003 and later with the Fresno State HPV team. Pocock, a Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineer, is currently a valued member on Blue Dolphin Design and Engineering's Mechanical Engineering staff.
